Airparif, the association responsible for monitoring air quality in the Île-de-France region, is announcing an episode of particulate pollution ( PM10) for this Wednesday, March 5, 2025. Airparif forecasts that the information and recommendation threshold of 50 µg/m³ will be exceeded. The meteorological conditions forecast by Météo-France are not conducive to effective dispersion of the pollutants.
Due to the increase in fine particulate matter, Airparif and the Paris Prefect of Police are imposing a reduction in speed on the roads this Wednesday, from 5:30 am to midnight, and encouraging the use of public transport.
Motorists in the Paris region will have to adapt their driving habits. Faced with an air pollution episode affecting the Paris region this week, the Prefect of Police has decided to reduce the speed limit by 10 to 20 km/h on the region's roads and freeways, in order to limit pollutant emissions. The use of public transport is also recommended.
" Poorly dispersive meteorological conditions will favor the formation and accumulation of particles. Air quality will be average to poor in Ile-de-France, with a risk of the information and recommendation threshold being exceeded", says the organization responsible for monitoring pollution.
Faced with this situation, the Préfecture de Police is imposing a 20 km/h reduction in the speed limit on all roads in the Paris region. In concrete terms, this means that :
The authorities also recommend limiting motorized travel and opting for public transport, while encouraging transit vehicles to bypass the Paris conurbation.
Residential parking will be free in areas usually reserved for residents. " It is only applicable within the user's usual residential parking zones," the municipality states on its website.
In view of this pollution episode, the health authorities recommend that sensitive people (children, the elderly, asthmatics or those suffering from respiratory and cardiovascular pathologies) limit intense outdoor physical and sporting activities.
Should the pollution intensify, traffic restrictions for the most polluting vehicles could be introduced in the next few days.
