While the competition for thebest traditional baguette in Paris and the best butter croissant in Île-de-France are about to make a comeback, the gourmet competition for the best sandwich in Greater Paris organized by the Greater Paris bakers' union, which took place this Friday, March 14, reveals the winners of the second edition.
While baguettes, viennoiseries and other pastries dominate the shelves of bakeries in Paris and the Paris region, sandwiches are also gaining an increasingly important place in the shop window. From the traditional ham and butter to the rosette sandwich and tuna mayonnaise... everyone has their own preference. So, this year, the Syndicat des boulangers du Grand Paris (Greater Paris bakers' association) decided to designate the best sandwich in Greater Paris by organizing the first edition of this dedicated competition.
For this first-ever event, 37 artisan bakers signed up, all located either in Paris, Hauts-de-Seine, Seine-Saint-Denis or Val-de-Marne. Each had to present a batch of 9 individually-sized sandwiches, with 3 identical meat sandwiches, 3 identical fish sandwiches and finally 3 " veggie " sandwiches, also identical.
The jury, made up of gastronomy professionals, had to choose between recipes as gourmet as they were varied. After smelling, touching and tasting the many competing sandwiches, the jury finally decided on Anibal & Sophie Lopes from La Renaissance bakery in Châtillon as the winner of this year's competition. Having placed 3rd last year, this year they succeeded in climbing to the top of the podium.
They are closely followed by Laurent Bergeron of Boulangerie du Champs de Mars in Paris's 7th arrondissement. Finally, Maxime Taranne of Boulangerie Alexine, Faubourg Saint-Denis Paris 10, climbs to 3rd place on the podium.
And the competition doesn't stop there! The overall winners, Anibal & Sophie Lopes, will have the honor of representing Greater Paris at the National Finals of France's Best Sandwich, to be held on May 5 on the parvis de Notre-Dame, during the Fête du Pain (May 1-11). A not-to-be-missed event for all bakery and gastronomy enthusiasts!
If you'd like to sample these little marvels, head for the winning bakeries, located all over Greater Paris. The perfect opportunity for a gourmet break and a unique culinary experience!
