On Saturday, May 18, 2024, Nuit des Musées invites you to discover the Maison-atelier Foujita, located in Villiers-le-Bâcle. This last home of the famous Franco-Japanese painter Tsugouharu Foujita takes visitors back in time to the 1960s. The house and studio, perfectly preserved, will amaze the curious.
Unchanged since the painter's death fifty years ago, Foujita's house and studio have become a place of memory and a place of pilgrimage for lovers of theEcole de Paris. Arriving in Paris in 1913, the eccentric painter headed for Montparnasse. There, an artist introduced him to Picasso as a fairground phenomenon, but Picasso was quick to spot Foujita's talent and take him under his wing. After almost 20 years in Paris, Foujita decided to travel, first to Latin America and then to Japan, where he returned in 1933.

Foujita returned to Paris in 1950. In 1960, he bought a small house in Villiers-le-Bâcle in the Essonne region of France, where he and his wife retired to art, keeping a small studio. This house-workshop was the artist's last home, which remained unchanged after his death. The Département de l'Essonne has organized a series of events to bring to life the style of this dandy of the Années Folles.
Enter the intimate studio of Léonard Foujita, a multi-faceted artist halfway between East and West. During your visit, discover his links with the 1924 Olympic Games and his passion for sports, particularly combat sports.
Foujita considered his monumental paintings on white backgrounds to be his masterpieces. To mark this Olympic year, rediscover the Combats diptych through the prism of the martial arts, and judo in particular. Reproductions of these two large-format paintings, paired with photographs of judo matches, will be available for viewing throughout the season.
