Tower, train station, cemetery, garden, hospital, art foundation, museums and theaters: the Montparnasse district in Paris's 14th arrondissement is a lively crossroads. There are many cultural and artistic venues, restaurants and cafés to satisfy your taste buds, and, of course, the capital's most famous skyscraper.
By the way, did you know? The name Montparnasse is a reference to Greek mythology: this legendary mountain was home to the nine Muses of Apollo, God of the arts, song and music (among others). These Muses each represented a specific art form: Euterpe for music, Terpsichore for dance, Thalie for comedy, Erato for lyric poetry...
But what does this have to do with Paris? The story goes that in the 17th century, students nicknamed this district "Mont Parnasse", because of its proximity to the Beaux-Arts. Many young artists occupied this corner of the 14th arrondissement, transforming it into an artistic hot spot. The nickname stuck.
Art is always to be found in Montparnasse, and even more so on this Fête de la Musique day. The muse Euterpe is sure to inspire many artists this Wednesday, June 21, 2023, as several concerts are organized in the various streets of the district. Discover the program.
