Imagine all the versions of you that could exist, if one tiny detail of history had been changed. You could be a movie star, a famous scientist, a professor, a computer scientist, a gangster, a secretary, a TV presenter, a supermarket employee... And now imagine that all these versions of you exist simultaneously, in different universes, and that it is possible for you to switch from one life to another with a snap of your fingers.
This is an exciting and dizzying idea. That's the idea behindEverything Everywhere All at Once, the film directed by Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert and produced by the Russo Brothers(Avengers) and A24. Released in March 2022 in the United States, the film swept all the awards at the 95th Academy Awards, this Sunday, March 12, with 7 awards: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress (Michelle Yeoh), Best Supporting Actor (Ke Huy Quan), Best Supporting Actress (Jamie Lee Curtis), Best Original Screenplay and Best Editing. This makesEverything Everywhere all at once the most awarded film in the history of cinema.
Our opinion
In this multiverse on the verge of collapse, humanity's hopes rest on Evelyn Wang, played by Michelle Yeoh, a Chinese-American woman who feels increasingly lost in her life, sunk in her bills and family problems. With such a storyline, the Daniels explore a trendy theme at the moment, but with a new, unusual eye: no more cape-wearing superheroes lifting buildings. Evelyn is a simple laundress, overwhelmed by her daily life and embroiled in a story much bigger than her.
On the face of it, she doesn't have the resume to be a superhero... And that's just as well! This character, magnificently played by Michelle Yeoh, is human, imperfect, fearful, clumsy, selfish, stubborn... In short, he is like us. We follow with great pleasure and interest the evolution of Evelyn, we identify with her fears, her doubts, her victories; without forgetting the secondary characters, who also have the right to their story and their development.
This film already promises to be a classic of cinema. It brilliantly explores the concept of the multiverse, and finally gives us something to dream about, to think about, to invent: if you had made a different choice in your past, no matter how insignificant, what would your life be like today? The Daniels play with these different realities with great humor.
However, the stakes of this story are not made fun of. Although the identity of the big bad of the story is quickly guessed, the antagonist of the film is a complex character, sometimes endearing, and mostly very threatening.
Everything Everywhere All at Once is a spectacular piece of entertainment, which delicately deals with universal subjects, such as identity, acceptance of others and of oneself, growing up and growing old, the search for happiness...
A wonderful film that was unanimously acclaimed by Sortiraparis. We can only advise you to go and see it!
Evelyn Wang is at the end of her rope: she no longer understands her family, her work and is overwhelmed by taxes... Suddenly, she finds herself plunged into the multiverse, parallel worlds where she explores all the lives she could have led. Faced with dark forces, only she can save the world but also preserve the most precious thing: her family.
