He had moved all of America with the adaptation of his play The Father, which won two Oscars (best adapted screenplay and best actor for Anthony Hopkins). The French playwright Florian Zeller, returns to the cinema with a new adaptation of one of his writings, The Son, which is just as moving. The film is scheduled for release on March 1, 2023.
For this new feature film, Anthony Hopkins(Armageddon Time, Thor, Westworld) returns, he is accompanied by Hugh Jackman(X-Men, The Greatest Showman, Reminiscence), Laura Dern(Jurassic Park, Big Little Lies, Star Wars 8) and Vanessa Kirby(Pieces of a woman, Mission Impossible: Fallout, Fast and Furious: Hobbs and Shaw).
Our opinion
After Alzheimer's in The Father, Florian Zeller is interested in depression in The Son, which again, causes the despair of a dysfunctional family. Hugh Jackman plays the father of a teenager who has no taste for anything anymore, and who can't be listened to. It is a very hard drama, that the French playwright proposes.
Nicolas, the son of the title, played by Zen McGrath, is lost in the middle of this father who puts an inordinate pressure on him, this mother who does not manage to understand him, and the new companion of his father, who does not even know what to say to him. It is there that the emotion wins, the situation of the young man could be easily solved, if his family had known better how to help him. In short, the treatment of the relationships between the characters is magnificent, and if the film does not offer the torrent of emotion that The Father did, this new opus also has its share of heartbreaking scenes, including a dilemma faced by the parents of the young man in a hospital. But we won't tell you more!
This is a mainstream film, but beware, it's a heavy subject, possibly traumatic for a more sensitive audience.
Nicolas is seventeen years old and seems to have trouble living. He is no longer the bright child who used to smile all the time. What has happened to him? And why doesn't he go to school anymore? Overwhelmed by events, his mother doesn't know what to do anymore, and Nicolas asks to live with his father. His father does everything he can to try to save him and give him back his taste for life. But can you really save someone other than yourself?
