Mufasa: The Lion King, the new Disney creation directed by Barry Jenkins, joins the Disney+ catalog today. After the success of The Lion King in 3D animation, we're going back in time with a new film centered on Simba's father, Mufasa.

Mufasa: The Lion King plunges us once again into the world of The Lion King, which has lulled the childhoods of millions. Following Jon Favreau 's animated film The Lion King in 2019, Barry Jenkins returns with the story of Simba 's father Mufasa in a new live-action 3D animated film.

Where and when can you see Mufasa: The Lion King?

Mufasa: The Lion King will be available on Disney+ from September 19, 2025.

Synopsis: MUSAFA: LE ROI LION calls on Rafiki to pass on the legend of Mufasa to the young lioness Kiara - daughter of Simba and Nala. He will be helped by Timon and Pumbaa, whose shock formulas are now well known. Told in flashbacks, Mufasa's story is that of an orphaned lion cub, alone and distraught, who one day meets the sympathetic Taka, heir to a royal lineage. This chance encounter marks the start of a journey full of adventures for a group of "undesirables" in search of their destiny, whose bonds of friendship will be put to the test when they have to team up to escape an enemy as menacing as it is deadly...

We are reunited with our beloved characters, who take us back in time to tell us the story of Mufasa. The famous pair Timon/Pumba and the wise Rafiki, Simba's sidekicks and key characters in The Lion King, revisit Mufasa's life, which they explain to Simba's daughter Kiara, whose story we follow in The Lion King 2 cartoon.

As you may have guessed, this won't be a 3D-animated remake of Lion King 2, but a completely new film. Mufasa: The Lion King will tell us more about the great rivalry between Mufasa and Scar and his reign over the land of the lions. At last, some answers to questions we've been pondering for years.

Created in 1994, the animated film The Lion King, directed by Roger Allers and Rob Minkoff, is already 30 years old. A huge critical and financial success, The Lion King remained Disney's biggest hit for several years, dethroned by the arrival of The World of Nemo in 2003.

While you're waiting for the release of Mufasa: The Lion King, there's nothing to stop you taking a step back in time by watching the 3 cartoon opuses, which are sure to bring back memories!

Here are our first impressions of Mufasa - The Lion King:

With special effects that almost make us forget that the animals aren't real, viewers are immersed in Mufasa's story, a brand-new story unlike The Lion King, which was based on the cartoon. The technologies used are enhanced by a lively soundtrack, although once again we find the classic Lion King plot, with two loving parents and a child who makes a "tragic mistake". Nevertheless, the film's opening heralds a promising sequel and, above all, a new story that we can't wait to discover.
