Celebrating a film in the competition for its humanist qualities, the 2025 Citizenship Award went to Jafar Panahi's Un Simple Accident.

A few hours before the announcement of the Cannes Film Festival 2025 prize list , a final parallel prize was awarded today: the Prix de la Citoyenneté. This is the seventh consecutive year that this prize has been awarded to one of the films in the official competition for its artistic qualities and its values of humanism, secularism and universalism.

This year's jury, chaired by Franco-Belgian filmmaker, actor and novelist Lucas Belvaux, included filmmaker and director of photography Muriel Coulin, filmmaker, screenwriter and author Delphine Coulin, journalist and head of RFI's cultural service Isabelle Chenu and Swiss filmmaker and producer Lionel Baier.

The jury unanimously awarded the Prix de la Citoyenneté 2025 to Jafar Panahi's film Un Simple Accident, stating: "The jury awarded the Prix de la Citoyenneté to Jafar Panahi'sUn Simple Accident for its ability to question us about the notions of freedom, justice and free will. We were particularly impressed by the way the director used cinema to turnUn Simple Accident into a reflection on individual responsibility, courage and the need to stop the cycle of violence.

Created by theClap Citizen Cannes association, chaired by Franco-Moroccan filmmaker Nabil Ayouch, last year's Prix de la Citoyenneté was awarded to the film Bird by British filmmaker Andrea Arnold.
