What are we to make of Captain America: Brave New World, Marvel's new take on the star-spangled superhero? First of all, you're going to tell us that a fourth Captain America movie might be too much, right? Well, no! And with good reason: thanks to the change of heroes (from Steve Rogers to Sam Wilson, with a new outfit and new abilities), it feels like a whole new saga. A fresh wind even blows through the film's story and context, shaking up the cards of an aging hero.
A more political feature, it's also well-paced and fairly dynamic, with impressive fight scenes that aren't overly complex in their execution (in short, you don't get mixed up, which is something you can criticize a lot of hero fights in this kind of film, which are sometimes a bit messy in this type of scene). It's moving at times, just as it's funny. As a rule, scenes tending towards emotion are immediately softened by a comic scene, which works here, even if it's a bit of a rehash.
In fact, this is one of the criticisms that can be levelled at the film: on the whole, despite the sustained pace (there's never a dull moment), the film is rather flat. There's little or no real suspense, and the screenplay is pretty much straightforward... Nothing is particularly transcendent. Even the cameos, expected or not, don't get the crowd going. So maybe that's not the film's objective, and maybe that's also its strength, but when Marvel gets us used to this type of scene, we inevitably expect a little more. The post-generic scene is dispensable and tells us nothing we already know about the future of the MCU.
Still, the film makes a few good points: it tries to link the universes together. The film makes the link with Louis Leterrier 's 2008 film The Incredible Hulk(although we're not particularly convinced by this link, as the actors playing Bruce Banner have changed between this film and Avengers, and nothing is explained on this subject, unlike the evolution of General Ross), and with The Eternals, and the mention (at last!) of the Celestial that appeared in the middle of the Indian Ocean. The film even allows itself the luxury of teasing the arrival of the mutants with the appearance ofAdamantium, the metal covering Wolverine 's bones and here taken from the carcass of the Celestial.
Harrison Ford shines as Thaddeus Ross, whose psyche is far more complex and interesting than that of the late William Hurt. Anthony Mackie, like no other, leads his character to perfection, and the rest of the cast, though a little less present throughout the film, provides a solid foundation for the plot and the interaction between the characters.
So there's nothing new on the horizon, but the film as a whole is quite good and will ensure you have a good time in theaters. All you have to do is make up your own mind.
