Scott Beck and Bryan Woods, the director-writer duo behind, among others, Sans un bruit, return to horror with Heretic, a thriller starring Hugh Grant in this unexpected register, alongside Sophie Thatcher(Yellowjackets) and Chloe East(Generation).
Heretic will be released in cinemas from November 27, 2024.
Synopsis: Two young missionaries from the Mormon Church in a small Colorado town go door-to-door in the hope of converting the townspeople. In the evening, after a fruitless day, they decide to knock on the door of an isolated house. They are greeted by the charming Mr. Reed. But the young women soon realize that they have fallen into a trap. The house is a veritable labyrinth, and they'll have to rely solely on their ingenuity and intelligence to stay alive...
Hugh Grant plays the charming Mr. Reed, a counterpoint role for the British actor more accustomed to rom-coms. As the storm rages outside, he opens the door of his modest home to twoMormon missionaries, Sister Paxton(Chloe East) and Sister Barnes(Sophie Thatcher).
Less gullible than they appear, the two young prudes, who go door-to-door in the hope of converting lost souls, don't feel safe in the presence of their host, who seems to know all the answers to the religious questions they raise. But as embarrassment sets in, the trap has, in fact, already closed.
Chatty, the first third ofHeretic gently builds up the pressure, and it's even quite original to watch a thriller in which no one wants to hurt or rush the other. While the two sisters try to keep their composure in front of their interlocutor, the latter tries not to frighten them. Unless...
Here the subject of religion is treated not through the redundant prism of possession, but for what it is, according to some: indoctrination of the weakest. In addition to its many shifts in tone, from humor to anguish - and even from one to the other - Heretic is above all a critique of mind control. Is that enough to frighten?
It's all there: a debunking of monotheistic religions, a paradox of doors to be opened, a leap of faith into prophecy, a heavy lesson in maieutics, and even a Matrixian choice in the will to believe or not. The result is a theological mishmash which, if it didn't make us shudder or provoke some kind of existential crisis, gave us a hell of a headache.
