Paris never ceases to surprise us with its unusual locations and atypical transformations. This time, it's the turn of Sainte-Rita church, located in the 15th arrondissement, to be transformed into a space dedicated to climbing. Welcome to the Climbing District Sèvres-Lecourbe, a unique climbing gym where the spiritual meets the athletic.
Saint Rita's Church, once dedicated to the patron saint of desperate causes, closed its doors to worship in 2015. The costs of maintaining and renovating the aging building required major work. Since then, this emblematic building, recognizable by its neo-Byzantine architecture, has been looking for a new vocation. This has now been achieved with the arrival of the Climbing District, which has safeguarded this historic site while infusing it with a resolutely modern energy.
With over 1,000 m² dedicated to climbing, the Climbing District Sèvres-Lecourbe offers a unique experience for beginners and advanced climbers alike. The church's vaults, once intended to lift spirits, are now home to climbing walls of all kinds: boulders, routes of varying difficulty, and even an area dedicated to technical training.
The hall makes a point of respecting the original architecture of the site. The church's stained glass windows, majestic columns and ornamental details have been preserved, creating an atmosphere that's both mystical and sporty. Climbing under these sacred vaults is almost like climbing a sacred mountain.
The Climbing District Sèvres-Lecourbe is open to all. Introductory courses are offered for those wishing to discover climbing, while more experienced climbers can test themselves on demanding, technical routes. The gym also has a convivial café area, where you can meet up for a drink or snack after your workout.
And for those looking for a place to work in an inspiring atmosphere, the Climbing District offers a coworking space for just €5 a day. Ideal for teleworkers looking for something new and quiet, this space offers a breathtaking view of the climbing walls and church vaults.
Located at 72 Rue Lecourbe, in the 15th arrondissement, the Climbing District Sèvres-Lecourbe is easily accessible by metro, via the Sèvres-Lecourbe station (line 6). The gym is open Monday to Friday from 7 a.m. to midnight, and at weekends from 8 a.m. to midnight. A word of advice: early morning, early afternoon or after 9.30pm are the best times for a quiet evening. Prices start at between 16€ and 18€ for adult admission, with season tickets and reduced rates available for regulars. Slippers are available for €4, and towels are included in the price.
The coffee area, accessible at no extra cost, is perfect for a gourmet break after a hard day's work. Finally, for teleworkers, the €5-a-day coworking space is a unique opportunity to work in an inspiring and unusual setting.
The Climbing District Sèvres-Lecourbe is a real departure from the usual climbing gyms, a place where history, culture and sport meet. So, are you ready to climb to new heights in this original setting? Climbing Distric also has a climbing gym on the Saint-Lazare side, housed in a former chapel. This is the first climbing gym on Paris's Left Bank, and it's sure to delight residents on the south side of the capital.
