If you haven't already heard, Saint-Ouen-sur-Seine, in the inner suburbs of Paris, is home to the Musée des Sapeurs-pompiers de Paris. With its unique collections retracing over two hundred years of the history of the Paris fire department, it's a place that's occasionally visited, notably on special guided tours or during the Heritage Days in September.
From firefighting outfits dating back centuries, to collections of helmets used by the Paris fire department during firefighting operations or ceremonies (and parades, such as the July 14 parade), to the various axes, spears and immense archive collections of fires that have occurred in Paris and the surrounding region... It's an immersion in the history of the Sapeurs-pompiers de Paris, created in 1811 by Napoleon 1st.
The highlight of the tour is undoubtedly the many fire-engine-red vehicles - still in operation - waiting patiently in the barracks. In fact, the tour takes place in the Saint-Ouen fire station of the Paris fire department, which is still in operation. Admission to these guided tours is free and open to all, but reservations are essential! A great idea for a family outing (even with teenagers and toddlers) or with friends during the February school vacations!
