PANJI: the epic story of an Indonesian prince

A cultural event on May 31, 2023 for all fans of Indonesia: through a conference, concert and dance performances, discover the cultural heritage of Prince PANJI, declared "Memory of the World" in 2016 and designated by Unesco in 2017.

Grand Première! Panji, an Indonesian epic. In the presence of Prince Mangkunegara X of the Principality of Mangkunegaran de Surkarta and Mrs. Kati BASSET Anthropologist, Director.

Born in Indonesia around the 12th century and popularized in East Java around the 13th century, the story of Prince Panji has been the source and inspiration of performing and visual arts in Java and Bali. The story of Prince Panji was the source and inspiration of the performing and visual arts of Java and Bali: dances, masks, music, puppets (wayang beber) that were transmitted as far away as Malaysia, Cambodia and Thailand.

Popular and flourishing during the Majapahit era, in the 14th and 15th centuries, the story of Panji traveled with traders on the Nusantara spice route to East Asia from the 17th to 18th centuries.

Oral tradition was the means of transmitting this epic. The story of Panji was also engraved on Hindu temple reliefs.

This event is a first in France, proposing a conference on thehistory of PANJI with the exceptional presence of Prince Mangkunegara X of the Principality of Mangkunegaran of Surakarta Indonesia and Mrs. Kati BASSET Anthropologist, Director

Ensemble gamelan, traditional Javanese dances and creations by two dance companies (Pantcha Indra from Paris and Eko's Danse from Indonesia).

The event will take place on Wednesday May 31, 2023 at 7:00 pm at the Salle Jean Dame,Paris 2nd arrondissement.
