Joël Pommerat, a leading figure in contemporary theater, returns with his latest theatrical creation, Amour 2, which takes place at the Théâtre du Rond-Point from February 4 to 13, 2025. This new opus is a continuation of his work, renowned for its depth and exploration of human relationships. With a look that's both poetic and realistic, he delves into the many facetsof emotional bonds.
L'Amour 2 brings together ten fragments from three of Joël Pommerat 's major works: La Réunification des deux Corées, Cet enfant and Cercles/Fictions. It explores universal themes such as filial love, burning passions, couples in search of children and friendships put to the test. In a pared-down staging, five performers embody these moments of humanity in the splendid Théâtre du Rond-Point. Like most of his creations, the sequences of tableaux with their realistic and fantastical overtones should play a major role.
Joël Pommerat is one of France's leading contemporary playwrights and directors. He founded the Louis Brouillard company in 1990, and is renowned for his ability to blend poetic writing with pared-down stagecraft. He is renowned for his exploration of human relationships and societal issues, often through fragmented narratives and deeply human characters. His flagship productions include La Réunification des deux Corées, Cet enfant and Cendrillon. He returns today with Amour 2 at the Théâtre du Rond-Point.
Our review:
How can you not love Amour 2 when you adored Cet Enfant and La Réunification des deux Corées? In an auditorium laid out in the shape of a square, Joël Pommerat 's text resonates and leaves us breathless for 1 h 20. Although the staging consists literally of two chairs and a telephone, Joël Pommerat always manages to surprise the audience.
His raw texts, which explore human relationships as realistically as possible, take you into another dimension. Whether you've seen his extracts before or not, the text is renewed, brilliantly interpreted by five actors. The square layout is a change from traditional theaters, and makes the play much more intimate: you become part of the characters' story as it unfolds before your eyes.
Joël Pommerat once again rises to the challenge of uncluttered theater, finishing his work with the Maison Centrale d'Arles with brio.
