A wealthy merchant, Mr. Perrichon, his wife and their daughter Henriette set off for the first time by train to Chamonix, followed - what a happy coincidence - by two young men, Daniel and Armand, both interested in the young lady's hand in marriage. The two men begin a benevolent but fierce battle to seduce the father, whose comical vanity and ingratitude will be put to the test during the journey.
In this singular vaudeville, Eugène Labiche lifts this small bourgeois society from its plush salons and launches it, proud of its adventure, on a wild ride along the (rail)road to the Sea of Ice. But as the journey unfolds, amid vertigo, fever and peril, her vulnerability grows and intranquility sets in. Nothing escapes the playwright's sharp eye, and his mischievous pen mercilessly captures the gesticulations and foibles, all exacerbated by discomfort.
This strange company, as vain as they are endearing, bitten by a sudden madness for the grandiose, will inexorably make their way to the punishment: making people laugh at them.
While Labiche has fun flaying the mythology surrounding travel, Frédérique Lazarini conjures up a whole 19th-century memory in this burlesque, fantasy and poetic theater: the exploration of movement, nascent tourism, the first means of locomotion and the magic of silent cinema.
A snowy expedition that makes you laugh... and transports you!
