The Revizor 's set is immediately mouth-watering: made up of rickety brown wooden furniture that sinks into the ground as if it were made of quicksand, illuminated by a crooked window opening onto a wintry landscape, the décor is eloquent and highly amusing. You'd think it was melting, like one of Salvador Dalí's soft watches.
Then, finally, it's dark, and the show begins. The actors immediately set the scene in a small Russian town, where the arrival of a government inspector is eagerly awaited. A young man from Petersburg has been staying at the hotel for a few days: his mysterious manner suggests that he is the famous Revizor. Everyone begins to treat him with all the respect in the world, even though he's just a rogue on the prowl.
Gogol 's genius lies in giving each of the actors a funny monologue, as each inhabitant has his or her own faults. One runs after gossip, the other is an odious informer, the chief is a liar, and so on. The fake Revizor, meanwhile, is a decadent, pleasure-hungry man about town - a far cry from the supposed austerity of a statesman.
Ronan Rivière and Aymeline Alix have staged a perfect production at the Théâtre du Ranelagh, blending classical theater and modern adaptation: we laugh a lot at this Revizor, not least thanks to the actors, whose faces and embodiment seem to have been made for the Revizor. Here's the cast: Ronan Rivière (Khlestakof), Michaël Giorno-Cohen (Le Gouverneur), Laura Chetrit (Maria), Jérôme Rodriguez (Dobtchinski), Hassan Tess (Bobtchinski), Luc Rodier (Osip) and Olivier Mazal accompanies the text on piano, adding a touch of musical impertinence.
