With its exhibition “Being modern”, Fondation Louis Vuitton makes a big splash: 200 works from the MoMA in New York will be exhibited in Paris.
Masterworks by Alexander Calder, Jasper Johns, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Frank Stella, Yvonne Rainer, unknown from the French museums, will be in Paris for five months. On this occasion, the French capital will also find works of art by Marcel Duchamp, Paul Cézanne, René Magritte and Paul Signac again, since they have been acquired in 1929 by the MoMA.
For 90 years now, the MoMA gives itself over to contemporary fine arts by purchasing the best of world interdisciplinary production. The 200,000 works of the collection – paintings, sculptures, engravings, photographs, videos, architectural and design items, performances – “celebrate creativity, openness, tolerance and generosity”.
We already know that Andy Warhol’s Campbell’s Soup Cans (1962), Constantin Brancusi’s Bird in Space (1928), Paul Cézanne’s Bathers, Walt Disney’s Steamboat Willi, Jackson Pollock’s Echo: Number 25, Carl Andre’s 144 Lead Square (1969) will part of this wonderful journey. If the trail looks chronological, we've been surprised by its contemporaneity! Yes, it's really at the MoMA that ended Space Invaders (1978) and the 176 DOCOMO emojis created in 1999 by Shigetaka Kurita.
This exhibition is possible thanks to MoMA extension works completed by Diller Scofidio + Renfro, works said to end in 2019.
We do not know about you, but we already have our entrance tickets for the MoMA!
