From October 2018 to January 2019, the Musée du Louvre presents an exhibition focusing on engravings by European artists of the 16th and 17th centuries. A way of tracing the history of engraving and discovering its importance at the time.

When the Louvre turns to engraving... from October 2018 to January 2019, the museum is presenting an exhibition entitled La Gravure en Couleurs du XVI au XVIIe Siècle en Europe, which, as its name suggests, highlights a large series of engravings and prints produced in Europe between the 16th and 17th centuries.

The exhibition brings together numerous sheets from French collections: Musée des Beaux-Arts de Besançon, BNF, Musée du Louvre, Fondation Custodia and ENSBA (Les Beaux-Arts de Paris)... All are mobilized to present a chronological panorama of important color engravings and prints by the greatest masters of the Renaissance and Mannerism. The British Museum, Oxford'sAshmolean Museum and Amsterdam's Rijksmuseum are also represented.

The exhibition is the result of a research project involving the BNF and C2RMF on " the study of pigments and watermarks in color engravings ". A study of technical research into Italian chiaroscuro (colored woodcuts), first experimented with from the 1500s to the 1650s. The idea behind these artistic experiments was to " translate rich shades of color into print ", with the aim of broadening painters' ability to convey light, shadow and line.
