Some objects and technologies have been part of our lives for so long that we can't even imagine a world without them. This is particularly true of the radio, an invention that has left its mark on history in so many ways. To highlight the importance of these objects, the Cité des Sciences presents Machine arrière, an exhibition format revealing the history and secrets of these essential inventions.
The first exhibition of its kind therefore focuses on the radio, and more precisely the radio-transistor: the radio that everyone can have at home, and use on a daily basis.
This exhibition, on show from April 30, 2025, and recommended for ages 15 and over, explains in detail the history of radio over the last 60 years, from both a technical and a social point of view. Since 1968, and the democratization of the transistor, radio has experienced a rich epic, which is perhaps little-known by today's younger generation.
The Cité des Sciences uses objects from different decades, graphs and statistics, historical and socio-political points to explain the place that the radio-transistor has occupied in France. At one time far more popular than television, radio was a source ofinformation and musical discoveries, a rallying point for sharing. A whole generation of young people was marked by and associated with the radio-transistor.
Technological advances and social changes have gradually transformed the use of radio, and its place in our homes.
Combining history and science, this unique exhibition allows us to rediscover the importance of this everyday object.
