Cinema is a magical world, where some people use their talents to tell us stories that are truer than life. From January 23 to May 25 2025, the Centre des Arts d'Enghien-les-Bains reveals some of the secrets of the world of cinema, in an exciting exhibition full of surprises.
The Cinéma en trompe-l'œil exhibition pays tribute to matte painters, the people responsible for creating the backdrops for films. These creative artists have to master a wide range of techniques and use their imagination to bring their sets to life, deceiving the discerning eye of the viewer. Photorealism, glass painting, digital art: these artists are tasked with creating detailed worlds to accommodate the story told by scriptwriters and actors.
With this free exhibition, the CDA d'Enghien-les-Bains lifts the veil on some of the secrets of the 7th art. Some of the world's most famous film sets are, in fact, paintings or constructions created by behind-the-scenes artists. From the Wild West to distant galaxies, from the Amazon jungle to urban cities, many iconic sets are presented to visitors.
For film buffs and the curious, it's an opportunity to learn more about this little-known but oh-so-essential profession. You'll discover the techniques used to create film sets - techniques that have evolved over 130 years of history and technological improvements.
The matte painters explain their tricks of the trade, using special attention to detail, perspective and light to guide the viewer's eye...
From the earliest films to today's blockbusters, from paintbrushes to digital graphics palettes, immerse yourself in this fascinating universe, where entire worlds come to life. An exhibition not to be missed!
