Emile Zola, much more than a writer... A photographer, too. From February 19 to April 20, 2025, theEspace Richaud in Versailles invites you to immerse yourself in the author's private life, with the exhibition Zola photographe, co-produced by the Ville de Versailles and the Médiathèque du patrimoine et de la photographie (MPP). Through more than a hundred prints and personal objects, this exhibition explores the lesser-known side ofÉmile Zola, the great 19th-century writer, as an amateur photographer.
The exhibition is structured into six chapters, tracing the key stages in the writer's photographic apprenticeship and practice, from his discovery of photography to the photographs he took during his exile in England. Among the exhibits are modern prints made from the original negatives held by the MPP, as well as loans from the Méjanes library inAix-en-Provence and the Musée d'Orsay. The equipment and techniques used by Emile Zola are also highlighted, reflecting his scientific and methodical approach.
The tour reveals another aspect of the life of the author of Les Rougon-Macquart, in particular his interest in scenes of daily life and portraits of those close to him. The photographs bear witness to his artistic sensibility, influenced by his proximity to the Impressionists. A wonderful exhibition for photography enthusiasts to discover!
