Expo des 150 brings the Cabaret du Chat Noir back to life until March 30, 2025. More than 350 artists exhibit their works in an incredible space, offering a unique dive into contemporary urban art. Located in the former Bergère telephone exchange, this historic venue in Paris's 9ᵉ arrondissement is transformed for our delight to host street-art and open stages.
In 2021, Le Chat Noir, a historic newspaper, launched the first edition of this exhibition with a powerful idea: to mirror the Salons des Refusés, offering a free, non-discriminatory exhibition space to a multitude of artists. Although often appreciated and recognized by the public, these creators often remained on the bangs of traditional cultural institutions and venues.
Above all, this initiative was an opportunity for Le Chat Noir to promote encounters between artists and their public, restoring the latter's essential role: that of revealing talent, shaping our collective imaginary museum. Naturally, this exhibition was aimed at the public.
Thus was born L'EXPO DES 150, a unique event in Paris bringing together an exceptional number of artists in a single venue, with totally free admission. An immersion in contemporary creation, accessible to all.
In 2022, the second edition moved to the TROIS BAUDETS, welcoming over 200 artists. In 2025, the exhibition takes on a new dimension, with some 350 artists occupying an even larger space. The objective remains unchanged: to bring together a generation of multidisciplinary artists, offer a setting conducive to encounters with the public and preserve this incredible creative ferment. Le Chat Noir ensures that the exchange between artworks and visitors takes place in ideal conditions, fervently celebrating the arts and freedom.
For 17 days, the Expo des 150 offers an immersive experience at the heart of urban art. These artists, whether major figures in contemporary art or emerging talents, have taken over the ephemeral space of the Cabaret du Chat Noir. With no set theme, some have chosen to honor the Cabaret and its era, while others, more abstract, have given free rein to their imagination, sometimes in dialogue with one another.
There are large panels, murals, contemporary sculptures, installations and even an anamorphosis on the floor. In short, you don't know where to look. From floor to ceiling and window to window, the entire space is taken over. This is an exhibition to be repeated over and over again, as it evolves with the artists' interventions and live performances.
The Cabaret du Chat Noir, founded in 1881 by Rodolphe Salis, has always been a place of artistic avant-garde. Today, it is reviving this tradition by hosting this major exhibition. The building, built in the 1920s of reinforced concrete and clad in red brick, provides an ideal setting for this event.
Le Chat Noir was much more than just a newspaper: it represented the bubbling spirit of Montmartre and the artistic bohemia of the Belle Époque. Associated with the famous cabaret of the same name, it served as apress organ for the artists and writers of the period, providing a platform for the leading figures of the Symbolist movement and the artistic avant-garde.
Illustrated by artists such as Steinlen, Le Chat Noir was a unique blend of satire, literature and art criticism, highlighting a thriving scene often on the bangs of official institutions. The paper ceased publication in 1895, but its legacy remains anchored in the history of Montmartre culture. Over a century later, Le Chat Noir was reborn in a new form, perpetuating its role as a defender of the arts and freedom of expression. Revived with the same ambition of giving a voice to independent artists, it follows in the footsteps of its predecessor while adapting to the times.
The exhibition is not just about discovering the works. A bar and café will be set up to encourage exchanges between artists and visitors. A music stage will host live concerts, DJ sets and performances, while a poetry stage will offer spellbinding evenings every Wednesday evening. A free expression wall will allow everyone to leave their mark, and artistic workshops, supervised by professionals, will offer the opportunity to experiment with various techniques.
