Good Vietnamese restaurants are not only to be found in the 13th arrondissement of Paris. One of our most delightful discoveries is Chez An - Au coin du Vietnam, a charming little nugget in the 14th arrondissement that's sure to please lovers of the exotic and, above all, of traditional dishes prepared according to the rules of the art.
It has to be said that even on a rather early weekday lunchtime, the restaurant fills up fast. It's a good thing we'd made a reservation. Not very large, it must have around thirty seats, with a couple of terraced tables for when the weather's nice.
A warm welcome and a smile. The lady of the house is on first-name terms with her customers, and there's no shortage of regulars. We take a look at the menu. You'll discover the essentials of Vietnamese cuisine, from nems to banh cuon, including beef luc lac, pork caramel, beef pho, bo bun and thit kho.
The banh cuôn (Vietnamese rice pancakes with pork, mushrooms and bean sprouts) is a real treat. The spring roll is plump and comes with the famous hoisin peanut sauce. Finally, the assortment of fried dishes is ideal for sampling both egg rolls and shrimp fritters. Starters cost between €7.50 and €10.50.
For the main course, we opt for the must-try beef Phở, ideal when the weather's cold (or not, as it's always hot in Vietnam). The broth is very fragrant, and the rice noodles, cooked à la minute, soak up the flavors of the broth and freshly chopped herbs. The beef, seared by the heat of the broth, is wonderfully tender.
My sidekick opts for the Bun Cha with rice vermicelli, egg rolls, grilled pork and crudités. The dish is richly garnished and a real treat. Dishes range from around €14 to €18.
If you're vegetarian, the menu offers a wide range of dishes, from egg rolls and ban cuon to stir-fried noodles and vegetarian pho.
We finish with two typical desserts, a soy flan with ginger syrup and a Saigon dessert with coconut, tapioca pearl and various treasures.
In short, a great address that we really enjoyed. This restaurant caters for all budgets and all publics, in search of exoticism and typical cuisine. It's still quite affordable. If you're going with a group, remember to make a reservation.
