We went to try Amour du Vietnam, a Vietnamese restaurant that opened its doors in Paris's 14th arrondissement just a few months ago. On the menu: crispy spring rolls, hearty bo bun, banh mi, and pho soups simmered with passion. We'll tell you all about it.

Looking for a good Vietnamese restaurant outside the 13th? Head to this restaurant near Montparnasse, at 157 Avenue du Maine, which will transport you to Vietnam with its flavorful homemade cuisine. At the helm of the kitchen is Son, a passionate chef with over 20 years of experience, who concocts traditional dishes, sometimes embellished with original creations such as the famous shrimp with crispy green rice.

As soon as we arrive, the decor catches our eye. It's colorful, original, and, we admit, a little busy for our taste, but it's typical of Vietnamese decor. Landscapes, flowers, paintings, and Vietnamese hats immerse us in the atmosphere. The welcome is warm and the service efficient, and we feel right at home.

Son, the chef in the kitchen, has had quite a career. Passionate about cooking in general, and French cuisine in particular, he first tried his hand at fusion cuisine. It didn't work out as planned, so he went back to basics with more traditional dishes, while retaining that little something extra that makes all the difference. Like these crispy shrimp coated in young green sticky rice. Less fat, more crunch—we're totally sold. The chef admits that he puts what he likes to eat himself on the menu. Like the French toast he loves, revisited with matcha and matcha or sesame ice cream.

The atmosphere is simple, warm, and unpretentious, just like home. On the menu, you'll find crispy spring rolls, steaming pho soups, generously filled bo bun, fried rice, and fragrant simmered dishes. Everything is homemade with fresh ingredients. Whether you come alone, as a couple, or with a group, you'll be welcomed with a smile and introduced to this cuisine as it is shared with family.

We couldn't pass up the house specialty: the signaturepho da for €18. This pho, served in a hot stone bowl, is Son's invention, and frankly, we understand why it's the star of the menu. The bowls arrive piping hot at the table, and all the ingredients are added at the last minute for maximum freshness. The meat is seared on the spot and the dish stays hot throughout the meal—a real treat. After 12 hours of cooking, the broth is ready for a pho made with sliced ribeye, sliced beef tenderloin, slow-cooked beef, and beef meatballs. The clear broth is rich in flavor and ideal for cold weather, like the day we visited.

We also tried the mi vit, a duck noodle soup for €16. What we like is the addition of vegetables that you don't usually find in these dishes. Mushrooms and pak choi add freshness to the whole dish. The duck is generous and the broth is well balanced, just right.

The signature bo bun at €16, whether with beef, chicken, or shrimp, is also one of the house specialties. Generously garnished and hearty, it reminds us why this Vietnamese salad has become a must-try in Paris.

Finally, we absolutely love the ribeye steak cooked on a hot plate, with its tangy, vinegary flavors and perfectly tender meat.

For starters, we chose the khai vi tinh yeu for €25, a signature starter for two that allows you to discover several specialties at once. Shrimp, spring rolls, and hot pâtés make up the set. An ideal choice when you don't know what to choose.

The grilled scallops at €10 for two add a touch of refinement to the menu.

The restaurant also offers a wide range of banh mi sandwiches for €6. And that's pretty cool because you can even order one at your table in the evening, which is quite rare in Vietnamese restaurants in Paris. We liked the special version, which could have used a little more mayo for our taste, but that's really just a minor detail. From classic pork to lemongrass chicken, lemongrass beef, crispy pork, or the vegetarian version, there's something for everyone. An €8 set menu even includes a sandwich with a can of beer or a dessert.

Don't miss the famous ca phe sua da for €6, a typical Vietnamese iced coffee that's a great way to accompany or finish your meal. For dessert, sweet options range from ché chuoi for €7, a sweet banana soup, to ché dau do nuoc dua for €7, a red bean and coconut milk soup topped with coconut ice cream and shredded coconut. The xoi xoai for €12, sticky rice with fresh mango, will delight lovers of Asian sweets. It comes in three flavors with mango bean purée as a bonus. We finish with the banh mi nuong for €9, Vietnamese-style French toast that honors the chef's passion for this dessert.

Despite a slightly busy decor that may not appeal to everyone, this restaurant is definitely worth a visit to enjoy authentic Vietnamese home cooking. Prices are affordable: expect to pay €7 to €10 for starters and €14 to €20 for main courses. The restaurant is open every day from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and from 6:30 p.m. to 11 p.m. Remember to make a reservationto be sure of getting a table.

In short, if you're looking for a good place to eat authentic Vietnamese cuisine in the 14th arrondissement, Amour du Vietnamis worth adding to your to-do list. It's a great alternative to the restaurants in the 13th arrondissement for lovers of hearty Vietnamese flavors.
