Les Fous de l’Île: the Île Saint-Louis institution's renewal

Nestled on the Île Saint-Louis, Les Fous de l’Île enjoys a new lease of life with a new chef at the helm of the kitchen: Jonathan Lafon.

Open since 2008 on the Île Saint-Louis by the pair Boris and Emile Bazan already behind the  Becs Parisiens group gathering the excellent Chocho by Thomas Chisholm, Le Christine and Le Colvert in Saint-Germain-des-Prés, Les Fous de l’Île is an institution. But whoever speaks of an institution does not necessarily alludes to dusty décor and humdrum food, not at all!

This summer 2022, Les Fous de l'Île starts a new chapter of their story with the arrival of a new chefJonathan Lafon, who gets his first position as a chef after being sous-chef at Relais Plaza.

As for the décor, Les Fous de l'Ile is very modern with contemporary decoration by Estelle Williot, a great glass roof over a large table for big groups of friends, teal on the walls and small chickens placed here and there on the shelves.

Discreet foodies and couples will also enjoy the small corner far from the center, set behind large glassed doors allowing you to see without being seen (too much) or disturbed by the noise. For Les Fous de l'Ile is a very cheeky bistro, the service ran smoothly by director Caroline Jamois and accompanied by patrons' laughter.

Hearty and friendly, Jonathan Lafon's cuisine is also complying with the seasonality of products, cooked on site as the Maître-Restaurateur title demands - granted a few years ago. It is hard to get something fresher than the board and its affordable €26 menu including starter/main/dessert changing daily, depending on the market and small producers supplying in short delivery systems, like farmer Christophe Latour.

To pair these bistronomic dish, Les Fous de l'Ile are also crazy about quality wines and enjoy an incredible cellar, from the most discreet vintages to the greatest houses, from classic bottles to festive magnums and Jeroboams, perfect for large tables of friends. Drinks that can also be enjoyed in the basement, in a mysterious wine room. For cocktail lovers, those available on the list are very original, like the Béguin (dark and white rum, apricot liquor and cinnamon syrup; €12).

The day we came, we enjoyed perfectly cooked squid (€16) served with great pieces of avocado and jalapeños condiments; turned artichokes (€10) with peppery pecorino, skipjack tuna (€26) tataki style with candied eggplant and ginger condiment, or the beautiful yellow poultry from Landes (€24), gnocchetti from Maison Briardines, spinach and the comforting yellow wine cream. It rocks!

And if you are into mozzarella, we might have found THE dish of your summer: a 500g burrata (!) served with pesto and great basil leaves (€50) to share with guests... or not!
