This past December, in the Saint-Blaise neighborhood in Paris 20th arrondissement, Giuseppe Cutraro opened his contemporary pizzeria, Peppe.
Peppe is the chef’s nickname who has been awarded 2019 World Champion for best pizza in Naples (a world contest open to 1,000 participants only), in the contemporary pizza category – one of the five categories of the contest. Since then, his restaurant has been named Europe's best pizzeria 2021!
Peppe, the contemporary pizzeria, enjoys a wonderful location on the Place Saint Blaise, at the corner of the rue Saint-Blaise and the rue de Bagnolet with view on the Saint-Germain de Charonne church.
Peppe enjoys a wide terrace on the sidewalk in front of the restaurant. And it is very pleasant.
Yet, the rue de Bagnolet is much frequented – even at that summer time – and traffic can be quite loud.
We smell what is baking in the pizza oven from the terrace and it whets the appetite.
And each table is set with its own hand sanitizer bottle and QR code for the menu.
Peppe being the creator of the world’s best contemporary pizza, the menu of the restaurant mostly features pizzas, as well as some antipasti and salads, without forgetting desserts (baba, hazelnut cream pizza, strawberry tiramisu…).
Of course, when visiting Peppe, we could not give the world’s best pizza a miss. And we wanted to taste it. The chef simply called it “champion du monde” [World’s Champion].
In this winning pizza, there are yellow tomato, 24-month Parma ham, provolone, mozzarella di bufala, toasted almonds and organic fig jam.
And we must say this world’s best pizza is delicious.
Chef Peppe thoroughly selects his ingredients, and it is all about quality.
Yellow tomato is sweeter and less sour than the red one, cheeses and ham are not too salty, just as it be, the fig jam brings something sweet to the pizza and almonds some crunch.
As soon as you take the first bite, you understand why this pizza has been awarded the best in the world.
In addition to ingredients used, Giuseppe Cutraro’s pizzas have a very tasty dough. The chef rises and ferments the dough. The dough is then light, dimpled, more digest. “I don’t want to make a pizza that will make you thirsty all night” the chef says with his charming Italian accent.
On Peppe’s pizzas menu, there are – among others – the “Queen Tartufo” with Terra San Pietrese summer truffle cream, fior di latte mozzarella, stir-fried button mushrooms, fresh Stracciatella from Puglia, toasted hazelnuts and summer truffles. A pizza giving pride of place to truffle. And it tastes so good. And there is a lot of fresh truffle shavings.
As for drinks, cocktails are based on Italian-inspired recipes.
The Basilicum with gin, lemonade and basil is exquisite and very refreshing.
Peppe also serves Neapolitan craft beer.
Gisueppe Cutraro is specialized in contemporary pizzas, pizzas that revisit traditional recipes with a nice and modern touch. And because of the health crisis, he is the world champion until 2021, the 2020 edition being canceled.
Before opening his own pizzeria, Peppe worked as the chef for Big Mamma group (Popolare, Pink Mamma, Ober Mamma, Mamma Primi…).
Peppe, the restaurant serving the best pizza in the world is very coveted. You better book to make sure you can taste it.
