The Left Bank is home to a brand-new deli, just a stone's throw from the Luxembourg Gardens: Meshuga and its New York-style sandwiches!

In Paris, delicatessen openings have been numerous lately, mostly on the Right Bank: Sonny's Deli and its chubby sandwiches, Shosh by the chefs of Shabour... It's about time the capital's Left Bank followed suit! Now it's here, with the inauguration of Meshuga, a new deli just a stone's throw from the Luxembourg Gardens.

Like a real New York deli, Meshuga's menu features the great American street-food classics, but in a retro Californian diner atmosphere with pop tones. The two owners of Meshuga, Edward Touret and Amélie Weill, have chosen to revisit sandwiches in their own way, but they all share the same base: a soft, brioche-like, slightly sweet Roll Bun.

On the menu at Meshuga, 8 must-try delicatessen recipes:

  • The Lobster Roll, topped with chunks of lobster and spiked with a homemade tarragon mayonnaise. Our favorite!
  • The Tuna Melt, with melted cheddar, Ortiz tuna, homemade mayonnaise, onions, snipped chives and homemade coleslaw.
  • The Egg Salad, with crumbled hard-boiled eggs mixed with homemade yuzu kosho mayonnaise, shallot brunoise, pickle brunoise and chives.
  • The Smoked Salmon, with slices of smoked salmon, cream cheese, lemon, chopped shallots, red onion pickles and house mayonnaise.
  • The Chicken Caesar, featuring roasted free-range chicken, homemade Caesar sauce with old-fashioned mustard mayonnaise, anchovy brunoise and capers, iceberg lettuce and fried onions.
  • The Hot Dog, created in the purest tradition of New York Ashkenazi hot dogs, topped with Will's Smoked Meat sausage, sauerkraut and fried onions.
  • The Grilled Cheese, whose recipe is kept secret!

Of course, these hearty sandwiches are accompanied by homemade coleslaw or latkes balls, golden patties made from potatoes, eggs and flour, a staple of Ashkenazi cuisine, before finishing with a homemade sundae.

So, how about a trip to the deli?
