As for the cast, all the actors of the series are here, that is: Hugh Bonneville (Paddington) as Lord Robert Crowley, Earl of Grantham, as well as Michelle Dockery (Anna Karenine, Bush), Laura Carmichael, (Madame Bovary, A United Kingdom), Brendan Coyle (12 Monkeys, Mary Queen of Scots), Rob James-Colliers (The Ritual, Coronation street), Sophie McShera (Galavant, Cinderella) and even Maggie Smith (Harry Potter) as Lady Violet Crawley, Dowager Countess of Grantham.
Plot:
1927. Since Edith’s weeding, many things have changed in Downton. Whereas the Earl of Grantham and his wife have been employing fewer servants and Mary and Henry have decided to leave the superb house, the entire household learns that king George V and queen Mary are on their way. Yet, when they arrive, the king’s butler starts shaking things up in the house. Anna decides to stand against all the servants and asks Lady Mary to call in Carson, the former butler who saved the estate so many times before…
Review:
Downton Abbey is a movie perfectly in line with the British TV series: with the same polish and underlying plots and a true gift for period costumes. A movie of a rare beauty, as for the photography and the frame of the shots, always polished and aesthetic.
We must congratulate the cast, the same from the TV series, that we're happy to see one last time on screen. Special mention to Maggie Smith, always brillant and incredible as the Dowager Countess, with her oh-so famous spicy and dry wit. A humor popping here and there and always welcome, shining a light even in the most tragic moments. A very refreshing and oh-so British movie that is fine and perfectly controlled for a conclusion worthy of one of the best British productions so far.
