Emma Watson, Saoirse Ronan, Meryl Streep or Timothée Chalamet are part of the beautiful cast of Greta Gerwig's last film (before Barbie). Adapted from the famous novel by Louisa May Alcott, "The Daughters of Doctor March" is to be (re)discovered on television, this Sunday, May 23, 2023.

A few months before her adaptation of Barbie, Greta Gerwig 's previous film , The Daughters of Doctor March, is broadcast on television this Sunday, April 23, on France 2, at 9:10 pm.

Based on the famous novel The Four Daughters of Doctor March by Louisa May Alcott, published in 1868, this new feature film is a personal re-reading of the book, a film both timeless and current where Jo March rethinks her life.

Our interview with the cast

And to play the daughters of Dr. March, Greta Gerwig called on Emma Watson(Harry Potter, Beauty and the Beast) as Meg March, but also Saoirse Ronan (Lady Bird, Mary Stuart Queen of Scots) in the role of the rebellious Jo March, Florence Pugh(Midsommar) as Amy March and Eliza Scanlen as Beth March.

But that's not all since the very popular Timothée Chalamet (Call me by your name, My Beautiful Boy ...), Laura Dern or the talented Meryl Streep are also part of the cast. Also Louis Garrel, Chris Cooper, Tracy Letts, James Norton and Bob Odenkirk.

Our review

Greta Gerwig offers us a very modern version of Louisa May Alcott's work. The four daughters of Dr. March all have a penchant for art and aspire to earn a living freely and on their own without depending on a husband and ignoring convention. Meg sees herself as an artist on the stage, Jo longs to become a writer, Amy a renowned painter and little Beth a piano virtuoso. Yet they live in a male-dominated world and must have a good marriage to "make it". Greta's adaptation is beautiful and touching, the film takes place over 10 years and each season is represented, which is a lot of work for the director. We regret at times not having a distinctive sign to identify immediately in which period the scene we have in front of us takes place, but we quickly get carried away by the whirlwind of the lives of these heroines.
