The Farewell is a Chinese American drama comedy written and directed by Lulu Wang that will be out on January 8, 2020 and in VOD from May 8, 2020 in France.

The Farewell follows a family that discovers their grandmother doesn’t have long to live anymore. Her relatives decide – according to the Chinese tradition – not to tell her and throw a family reunion before she dies. The movie is based on a story called What You Don’t Know, shared by Wang in This American Life in April 2016. Wang has said the movie was based on her grandmother’s illness and declared she “always felt the gap in her relationships with her family, classmates and the world I live in. it’s the very nature of immigration and double culture”.

Starring in the movie, Awkwafina, a young Chinese American actress that is very trendy now and we discovered as Ming Fleetfoot, Spencer and Eddie’s avatar in Jumanji Next Level and soon in Raya and the last Dragon. She plays with Tzi Ma (Mulan, Skyscraper).

Plot:

When they learn their beloved grandmother and mother Nai Nai suffers from an uncurable illness, her relatives – according to the Chinese tradition – decide to hide the truth from her. They use her grandson’s wedding as an excuse to throw a family reunion and to share all together the last happy moments. For her granddaughter Billi, born in China but raised in the United States, the lie is harder to respect. But it’s also a chance for her to rediscover her origins and the intensity of the bounds she has with her grandmother.
