After “Into the Wild” (2007), “The Last Face” (2016), Sean Penn is back as a movie director. His upcoming movie, “Flag Day”, opens on September 29, 2021 in French movie theaters.
“Flag Day” is the 6th feature film directed by Penn who also produces it and plays in it. Like “Into the Wild”, this is a biopic but this time about robber John Vogel, based on the book written by his daughter Jennifer Vogel, “Flim-Flam Man: The true story of my father’s counterfeit life”.
In “Flag Day”, Penn plays John Vogel. For the part of his character’s daughter, Penn has decided to cast his daughter, Dylan Penn. They share the screen along with Josh Brolin (Thanos in Marvel movies and soon in “Dune”).
“Flag Day” original soundtrack – that premiered at the 2021 Cannes Film Festival where it was officially competing – has been cowritten with Cat Power.
John Vogel (Sean Penn) was an uncommon man. As a child, his daughter Jennifer (Dylan Penn) was amazed by his magnetism and his ability to make of life a great adventure. He taught her a great deal about love and joy, but she will discover his secret life as a bank robber and counterfeiter. Based on a true story, “Flag Day” is about a young lady fighting to heal her past injuries, while rebuilding her father-daughter relationship.
