The credits forAmsterdam, the new film from David O. Russell(Fighter, Happiness Therapy), are packed with stars: Christian Bale, Margot Robbie, John David Washington, Robert De Niro and many more are in this thriller, due for release on Tuesday November 1, 2022.
Seven years after his previous feature, Joy, David O. Russell returns with this historical fresco inspired by true events, set in 1930s New York. We discover the fate of two friends, accused of a murder they didn't commit. In their race to find the real culprits, they cross a whole swath of American history between the wars, and cross paths with a mysterious organization.
In addition to the actors already mentioned, the cast also includes Rami Malek(Mourir peut attendre, Une affaire de détails, Bohemian Rhapsody...), Zoe Saldana(Guardians of the Galaxy, Avengers: Endgame...), Chris Rock(Spiral: The Legacy of Saw), Mike Myers, Taylor Swift, Matthias Schoenaerts(Sons of Philadelphia, The Old Guard...) and Anya Taylor-Joy(Peaky Blinders, The Northman, The New Mutants...).
Our verdict
David O. Russel's feature film benefits from his director's wild ambition. Buoyed by the success of his previous films, the filmmaker seems to have been given carte blanche to tell the story of this little-known episode in the history of the American interwar period. And although the film is rather long, and would have benefited from more pacing, it's colorful enough to work. Admittedly, there's never any daring, nor any thinking outside the box, but it's a decent interwar thriller, where the wounds of the First World War have barely had time to heal, before the beginnings of the Second begin to appear.
Despite its impressive cast, none of these brilliant actors manages to pull their weight, and each of them seems to be flatly reciting an over-written text. Platitude is a little too prevalent throughout this work, which promises a touch of madness that never really appears on screen.
