In Île-de-France, things are getting worst and suggest the third wave is coming. As the English variant is spreading in Île-de-France, the regional health agency - Agence Régionale de Santé or ARS - calls for new measures.

In Île-de-France, as the world was about to celebrate the Holidays against a backdrop of coronavirus epidemic, as for health units, they were getting ready to face the next epidemic wave expected for January 2021. The scenario is happening. After calling for maximum vigilance, the Île-de-France ARS calls for new measures to curb the coronavirus epidemic.

Interviewed by RMC/BFMTV, Agence régional de Santé director Aurélien Rousseau describes the complexe situation the region is facing amid the coronavirus epidemic. He says that in one week, the incidence rate increased by 40 points in the area, reaching almost 200 Covid-19 cases for 100,000 inhabitants. For the record, the 200-case threshold is a determining criterion as it sets departments likely to be placed under early curfew. Between the fallout of the Holidays and the more contagious English variant spreading in the Paris area, the situation is not likely to get better if measures are not made consequently, as the region just recently managed to lower the occupancy rate in hospital intensive care units.

One of the consequences of a too high occupancy rate is that hospitals will have to cancel surgeries to spare as many beds as possible for Covid patients. In the event of overload, the medical staff being unable to save everyone might have to sort patients out.

Interviewed by BFMTV this Wednesday December 23, 2020, Aurélien Rousseau said the situation in the Parisian region was fragile, especially for the past couple of days, the ICU occupancy rate struggles to decrease. The same day, in Val d'Oise, local SAMU head Agnès Ricard-Hibon delivers an almost similar assessment to France Inter. She thinks the situation is still under control in the ER, but she is worried about the epidemic breaking out again. She thinks the third wave will be different, "including a slower but longer increase".

The government held a Council Defense this Wednesday January 13, 2021 in the morning. Prime Minister Castex is expected to host a press brief this Thursday and announce new measures.
