Good news for European Covid vaccination campaigns! European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced a quarter of the Europeans have been given one or two doses of vaccine. In all, in the 447 million EU inhabitants, 112,4 million have been vaccinated with 153,8 million doses (total of vaccines given for a first and second shot), namely 25.1% of the population.
"Vaccination is gaining speed across the EU: we have just passed 150 million vaccinations", the EU Commission President said in a tweet. She added: "A quarter of all Europeans have had their first dose. We'll have enough doses for vaccinating 70% of EU adults in July". As for Europeans given two shots (or the single-shot vaccine developed by Johnson & Johnson), 9% of them are fully vaccinated, according to AFP, namely 41,9 million people.
As for vaccine deliveries, the EU also relies on 410 million doses for the second quarter of 2021 (250 million doses of the Pfizer vaccine, 35 million doses of Moderna, 55 million doses of Johnson & Johnson, and 70 million doses of AstraZeneca). This is good news then, and a sharp improvement in vaccination. For the record, as of January 15, only 1% of the EU population had been given one dose of vaccine.
