As Covid-19 epidemic markers are getting out of control in Île-de-France and caregivers are worried about being overwhelmed, the horizon of herd immunity by mid-July remains credible to some doctors. According to Hôpital Raymond Poincaré ICU head Pr. Annane, this goal is “reachable” provided vaccination is completed anywhere possible.

Herd immunity by July 14th is a reachable goal”. This is the hopeful message given by Pr. Djillali Annane. Invited this Tuesday March 23, 2021 on France 2 broadcaster, Hôpital Raymond Poincaré ICU head in Garches, Hauts-de-Seine, considers that it is necessary “vaccinate in companies, high schools, colleges” to make it.

Therefore, the doctor agrees with European Commissioner for the internal market Thierry Breton who thinks Europe might reach herd immunity by July 14, as he told on Monday March 21 on TF1. As for vaccine deliveries in Europe, he said that “Today we clearly are able to supply 300 to 350 million doses by late June, and then, by July 14th […] we have the possibility of achieving immunity across the continent”.

But in the meantime, as underlined by Pr. Annane, “tension has been deteriorating” in hospitals over the past two weeks. To illustrate the severity of the situation in his services, the doctor explains the “situation remains very tense, the service is full, it is mostly filled with severe Covid-19 cases and more and more daily solicitations to hospitalize new patients are sent”. Without forgetting to give a little bit of hope. “We’ll hold on, as difficult as it might be, what matter is how we’ll make it. We need to have as little consequences as possible”, the doctor says. And to do so, vaccination remains the best solution.

Pessimistic experts
As the vaccination campaign continues in many countries on the Old Continent, herd immunity in Europe could be reached around July 14, according to the European Commissioner for the Internal Market. At the same time, several scientists and experts on the subject are expressing doubts about the credibility of such a scenario, deploring a "risky gamble" on the part of the European authorities.
