There have never been so many new Covid-19 infections worldwide. That's the stark conclusion drawn by theWorld Health Organization and theUN's global health agency. In their latest information bulletin, published this Wednesday, April 21, 2021, the two bodies estimate that the number of new Covid-19 contaminations is close to 5.2 million cases over the last seven days.
With the number of new cases rising for the eighth consecutive week worldwide, this is the highest number recorded by the two bodies since the start of the pandemic. The previous peak observed at the beginning of January 2021 was exceeded in the last week. This is a new world record for the number of Covid-19 infections.
In the same bulletin, theUN and WHO remind us that "big numbers can make us numb, but each of these deaths is a tragedy for families, communities and nations". The two organizations are particularly concerned about the increase in infections and hospitalizations among people aged 25 to 59,"perhaps" due to new highly transmissible variants and the increased social mix of younger generations. The sharpest rise in the number of contaminations was recorded in the South-East Asian region, particularly in India, followed by the Western Pacific.
