As the Covid-19-related health situation is deteriorating again in France, Olivier Véran considers the country is currently ‘at the beginning of a fifth wave”.

Like many other countries in Europe, France sees the Covid-19 contamination toll increase again for the past few weeks. So far, the situation is less preoccupying than in Belgium, Germany or even Austria – where new restrictions have been made such as putting non-vaccinated people in lockdown. But the health situation is deteriorating. This Monday November 15, 2021 the country’s incidence rate has moved over 100 cases for 100,00 inhabitants for the past seven days again, according to data issued by Santé Publique France; a first since September.

Interviewed on that matter by our peers from Ouest-France, the French Health Minister said the country was  currently “at the beginning of a fifth wave”. This Tuesday November 16, 2021 Olivier Véran stated: “We are not in a so-called exponential phase yet, but we clearly are at the beginning of a fifth wave”. He went on to say: “This wave is European. France cannot avoid it, even though it hit us later and even far later in comparison with many of our neighbors because of our good vaccine coverage and the health pass”.

For the time being, the French government does not consider instating very strict restrictions like in Austria. The executive best more on the return of the mask at school and the health pass determined by a 3rd dose of vaccine for people aged 65+.

Consequently, many people wonder if the health pass will be truly determined by the booster shot for people over the age of 50. “We have not made this decision today”, the Minister claimed. “50-64-year-old people will get their booster shots from December, we need to give them enough time to get vaccinated”, he added.
