As contaminations have not peaked yet, government spokesman Gabriel Attal announced France was “defeating the Delta variant”.

Even though the Omicron variant is still wreaking havoc in France, the Delta variant is about to disappear. Government’s spokesman Gabriel Attal has stated the Delta variant was currently found “in only 2% of contaminations. […] We are defeating the Delta variant that continues to clearly decline”, he said, happy, as the Omicron variant keeps quickly spreading.

As a matter of fact, contaminations have not peaked yet, as it was expected for mid-January. It could be explained by the emergence of the BA.2 sub-lineage variant that broke out in Denmark, said to be even more contagious than Omicron. No doubt it is already spreading in France, although the health authorities do not know how much. This new strain is likely to delay the peak of contaminations, and extend the saturation point in hospitals.

The hospital peak is far from being reached and will not be for several weeks. Although the number of people in ICU sick with Covid is decreasing, the toll of patients simply hospitalized keeps increasing. But here is some good news, the contamination case toll has been decreasing for the past seven days, for the first time since November. Data are still very high, the highest since the beginning of the health crisis, but epidemiologists have been noticing a reduction in speed, perhaps announcing a decrease.
