Culture feels the full force of the consequences of coronavirus currently spreading in France. This Friday March 13, 2020, Prime Minister Edouard Philippe has announced that any gathering of over 100 people was banned.
As a consequence, Paris half-marathon has been cancelled on March 1st and postponed to a later date. The Juste Debout event took place without an audience at Paris AccorHotels Arena this Sunday. The International Agricultural Show organized at Paris Expo Porte de Versailles closed a day earlier. And the Paris Manga and Sci-Fi Show and the Salon du livre planned on March 7 and 8 and on March 20 and 23 have been cancelled as well. Here are the events cancelled in Paris and Île-de-France.
Consequences? As asked by the chief of police, all concerts and shows schedules at the AccorHotels Arena until late May have been cancelled or postponed. Several of them already have a new date.
“Based on the measures announced by the government after the Security and Defense Council and the Council of Ministers this past February 29, the AccorHotels Arena wished to be able to anticipate the consequences of this announcement. The Arena contacted al its producing and organizing clients to consider – in close partnership with them – the potential adjournment of their shows in the artists’ and fans’ interests. The AccorHotels Arena remains fully into action and will let the audience know as the situation progresses” the venue in Paris 12th arrondissement said about COVID19.
As for the Zénith de Paris La Villette, they said: “subject to eventual evolutions to come in the government’s measures related to the places welcoming public, no concert will be cancelled these next 15 days”. Shows will continue as planned. But things are likely to change with the new decree now banning public gatherings over 1000 people.
Same thing goes for La Seine Musicale in Boulogne-Billancourt that said when concerts where sustained: “The government has announced all events over 5000 people in closed spaces were cancelled to prevent coronavirus from spreading. In the next few days, no concert at La Seine Musicale is cancelled, subject to eventual evolutions in case of new governmental measures related to the venues welcoming public”.
As for Parisian venues able to fit over 1000 people – the Olympia, the Salle Pleyel, the Elysée Montmartre, the La Cigale or even the Grand Rex – cancellations are unfortunately likely to happen in the upcoming hours and days.
