European Heritage Days 2019 at the Manufacture des Gobelins

For European Heritage Days, the Manufacture des Gobelins offers an exclusive tour to the heart of the exceptional know-how on September 21, 2019.

Known across the world for its exceptional tapestries, the Manufacture des Gobelins was created in the 15th century under Colbert and has kept on making the French crafts heritage live since then. For the 36th edition of European Heritage Days, discover this exceptional place thanks to a tour taking you to the heart of the “exceptional know-how, the vitality of the art creation and the contemporary design” on Saturday September 21, 2019.

The Manufacture opens and invites visitors to discover the “treasures of the institution in its warehouses where is stocked one of the richest collections of furniture in the world”. On the menu too, the opening of the restoration and creation studios “including the manufacture des Gobelins, Beauvais and Savonnerie, the heart of the creation for 400 years”.

Visitors can discover for European Heritage Days 2019:

  • The carpet of the Notre-Dame de Paris Cathedrale

It’s weaved based on a card by Jacques Louis de La Hamayde de Saint Ange at the Manufacture de la Savonnerie between 1825 and 1833. King Charles X originally planned to give the carpet of La Savonnerie to the choir of Notre Dame. A masterpiece made under the reign of Louis-Philippe in the La Savonnerie studio set in the Manufacture des Gobelins and unveiled for the first time in 1838 at the Louvre.

  • Exhibition “Creating for Louis XIV: the manufactures of the Crown under Colbert and Le Brun” and a tour of the courtyards

  • Carte Blanche to Mathias Kiss, contemporary artist, with the “Creating for Louis XIV” exhibition

  • Major contemporary creations by famous designers and produced by the Aterlier de Recherche et Création.

  • Painted tapestry cards under the art management of Mads Nørgaard and for the next weavings for the museum of the Koldinghus castle in Denmark.
