Every year, European Heritage Days are the perfect occasion to rediscover a hidden heritage, sometimes forgotten… And if there’s one building you should visit on September 21 and 22, 2019, it’s the Sainte-Chapelle, set Boulevard du Palais and hidden from the general public by the outer walls of the Palais de la Cité, between the Palais de Justice and the Cour de Cassation.
Only 300 meters away from Notre-Dame de Paris, this gothic monument is yet a jewel in Paris: aged 800 years, the Sainte Chapelle is famous worldwide for its 1,130 stained-glass windows showing scenes from the Old Testament and the Passion of the Christ, and letting light coming from all the sides of the monument.
Beyond the religious building, the Sainte-Chapelle is an architectural treasure because it only required 7 years to build this 33-m long and 42.5-m high building between 1241 and 1248 and its 1113 stained-glass windows. Its spire – reconstructed in the 19th century – rises at 75 meters above the ground.
If you happen to go to the Sainte Chapelle, you’ll be invaded by peace because of the light and the echo generated by this room… Yet, you may come back for a classic music concert as concerts are frequently performed there!
