And there is nothing like the Sorbonne to be immersed in the country's heritage and culture, is it? This place of education - built in 1251 for the first building, then 1635 and 1884 for the following two - houses the headquarters of the Paris Academy Board of Education and the chancellery of the Paris universities. But this is also where about 20,000 students follow classes of the faculty of arts. Its amphitheaters and library make it look like a genuine museum and it would be so wrong to miss it!

Visit the Sorbonne

For European Heritage Days, the Sorbonne and the Academic Palace open for the 39th edition themed on "Sustainable Heritage". It particulary echoes the mission of this historic place. This is the occasion to travel across the story of the Sorbonne and admire the architectural and art wonders symbolizing this high place of knowledge. The tour set up, paced with informative boards and works by students from the Paris Academy of Art, will enable visitors to discover some of the most prestigious and history-filled places of the Sorbonne.

Come in this academic palace and admire the grand hall and the monumental statues of Archimedes and Homer, the peristyle adorned with mural paintings, the Grand Amphithéâtre, the Salon Richelieu and its treasures, the Grand Salon, the Salle des Actes and even the formal Salle des Autorités. The latter houses on the occasion an exhibition about academic gowns, their story - their origin dates back to the Middle-Ages - and what they mean.
