Discovering Oriental languages in a new light… This is what the Institut national des langues et civilisations orientales (or National Institute for Oriental Languages and Civilizations) offers you for the 37th edition of European Heritage Days from September 19 to 20, 2020. And this is the very first time the institute takes part in it only on Saturday September 19.
The National Institute for Oriental Languages and Civilizations – or Inalco – has been created in 1795. Its main mission being to preserve oriental languages and civilizations and teaching them. Ordered by the Marquis de Bacqueville in 1716, the building has been renovated and extended several times, and still houses the Maison de la Recherche de l’Inalco, as well as the library.
Formerly called Ecole spéciale des langues orientales [Special School for Oriental Languages], the institution aims at teaching living oriental languages. In the early 19th century, a dozen languages were taught, and about a hundred are today. For European Heritage Days, you are invited to discover the place for a free tour. This is a chance to know everything about oriental languages, from Russia to Oceanic languages, via Vietnamese, Burmese, Japanese, and even Mongolian, as well as their civilizations. Let’s go, friends, shall we?
