If you enjoy Jean Dubuffet’s art, and especially his “Jardin d’Hiver”, a cave included within Centre Pompidou, then run to Périgny-sur-Yerres, in Val-de-Marne, for European Heritage Days 2022. On a field close to his studio, in the middle of nowhere, the artist built his Closerie Falbala – listed as historic monument since November 1998.
This white structure is impressive because of its size and realization process. Then over 70 years of age when building it, the artist wanted to create a thought cabinet near his studio, a sort of “philosophic exercise chamber”, like he used to call it. And therefore, he built a villa, about 20 meters long and 15 meters wide, and 8 meters tall. Inside stands an Antechamber leading to the Logologic Cabinet of Dubuffet.
Then, Jean Dubuffet created a 1,600 concrete maze all around the villa with sorts of white menhirs and winding paths to prevent curious people from getting closer. His goal was to be away from his neighbors. The Closerie Falbala was done in 1976! This installation can be visited all year-round and is extended by a tour of the artist’s former studios, where are kept lots of his works, including the model of the work created for Renault Boulogne-Billancourt.
