For European Heritage days, Paris Palais d’Iéna – headquarters of the Economic, Social and Environmental Committee, opens on Saturday September 19 and Sunday 20, 2020 to invite you to different conferences and activities on the theme of this 37th edition, “Heritage and Education: learning for life”.

For European Heritage Days 2020, on September 19 and 20, the Conseil économique, social et environnemental [Economic, Social and Environmental Committee] also known as CESE opens the doors of its prestigious Parisian offices set within the Palais d'Iéna.

Members of the CESE – from intermediate bodies – welcome you on site so that you can discover the “house” and tell you about how this Republican institution works and what are the stakes, as well as the missions.

For architecture passionate, guided tours provided by lecturers from the Ecole du Louvre enable you to explore the richness of the Palais d’Iéna, an Art Déco jewel designed in the 30’s by Auguste Perret.

This year, the Palais d’Iéna welcomes the team of the Musée national de l'histoire de l'immigration for different conferences over two days.

Story of the Palais d’Iéna

Built from 1937 to 1946 by Auguste Perret, the Palais d'Iéna opens in 1939 as the Musée des Travaux publics [Civil engineering museum]. From 1956 to 1958, it becomes the seat of the Assemblée de l’Union française [French Union Assembly]. Then, in 1959, it houses the Conseil économique, social et environnemental, the third constitutional assembly of the Republic. This masterpiece by Auguste Perret is remarkable because of the size of the spaces and the quality of the materials used, such as concrete.

Detailed program:

  • Architectural tours: self-guided or guided tours by lecturers from the Ecole du Louvre to discover and enjoy the glory of the Palais d’Iéna and its architect, Auguste Perret.

  • Two conferences, “Architecture” with Bertrand Lemoine, and “Histoire et mémoire” with Serge Wolikow from the Fondation pour la Mémoire de la Déportation (FMD), and Marie-Anne Matard-Bonucci, contemporary history teacher at the Paris 8 university, as part of the CESE-FMD partnership “Mémoire et vigilance”.

  • Meetings and debate with the members of the CESE who will make you discover the CESE and the 80 organizations they are from. Talks with the rapporteurs of the latest works of the assembly and the opening to citizens of the CESE.
