A chapter is closing. Books of ten Paris subway tickets are to disappear from 2022. As the definitive end was announced for March 2022, this deadline has been postponed to September. Here is why.

It is the end of an era! Books of ten metro tickets are to disappear progressively from mid-October 2021 to bid farewell in 2022. This measure has been ruled for this April 14, 2021 by Ile-de-France Mobilités, the public transport authority, actu.fr reports.

In concrete words, the end of books of ten metro tickets (the famous T+ tickets) will take place in three steps in RATP stations and railway stations, including first stopping selling the cardboard tickets in vending machines in about a hundred stations starting from October 14, 2021. Then, in January 2022, these very tickets will be removed from an extra 176 stations.
Last but not least, in March 2022cardboard tickets t+ will no longer be available in vending machines or RATP desks.

The RATP offers you to discover stations and railways involved in the different steps:

But the calendar will not go as expected and the definitive end of books of subway tickets made of cardboard is eventually postponed and moved to six months later. This is what our peers from Le Parisien announced. Therefore the total stop of books of subway ticket sale is planned for September 2022, instead of March 2022.

The reason behind? A world shortage of chips, necessary to create Navigo passes and especially Navigo Easy passes, the very cards expected to replace the traditional cardboard tickets. "As it is the case in the car industry, there is pressure on the supply and stock of chips", Île-de-France Mobilités explained Le Parisien. "We're not in a shortage situation for Navigo passes, but we must anticipate to manage stocks". Therefore, machines and desks will keep selling books of ten subway tickets until September 2022.

For the record, every year, about 5 million tickets are demagnetized because they are too close from keys or coins... Furthermore, out of one book, 1 ticket in 10 is not used, because lost, damaged or forgotten.

But what will replace these tickets? Well, dematerialized tickets will take over.

In concrete words, if you are used to take public transit but want to keep your freedom, you shall have the Navigo Liberté+ pass. The idea? Traveling by validating your pass every time you commute. Therefore, every months, your commute trips are totaled and you pay the total amount of your trip the following month.

If you occasionally use Paris or Île-de-France transport, or if you are a tourist, you should rather go for the Navigo Easy pass, sold for €2 and rechargeable at the vending machine or desks.

Last but not least, you can validate your ticket thanks to your smartphone via the Île-de-France Mobilités, Bonjour RATP and Assistant SNCF applications (careful though, not all phones are compatible).

Despite the progressive removal of books of ten metro tickets, you can still buy cardboard tickets such as ticket t+ by the piece, or the origin destination ticket enabling you to travel to the suburbs. And what about using the cardboard ticket t+ books purchased before March 2022? Do not panic, the RATP says you can keep on using your new cardboard t+ tickets, even after September 2022.
