The capital is seriously preparing for the arrival of the 2024 Olympics at Paris. As proof of this, several of the city's landmark monuments will soon be closing their doors to embark on major renovations. This is particularly true of the famous Grand Palais, nestled on Avenue du Général Eisenhower.
Since January 2021, the Grand Palais has closed its doors to the general public to make itself even more beautiful and welcome the 2024 Olympic Games in style.
We can only imagine the disappointment of the huge number of art lovers who flock to the Grand Palais every year to admire its ever-prestigious exhibitions. In recent years, the Parisian landmark has won us over with exhibitions by Miró, Irving Penn, Edward Hopper, Rodin and, of course, Claude Monet... But art lovers can rest assured that, in 2021, the Grand Palais will be moving to the Champ-de-Mars, where it will remain until 2024. The opening is scheduled for June 12, 2021!
To this end, the Réunion des Musées Nationaux (RMN)-Grand Palais has joined forces with Paris 2024, entrusting the architectural firm Wilmotte & Associés with the design of an impressive 10,000 m² ephemeral building.
While you wait to see the ephemeral Grand Palais for yourself, we can already tell you that the building, which respects the compositional axis of the Champ-de-Mars, will now take its place on the Plateau Joffre, rising to a height of 20 metres, which is strictly necessary for its operation.
In terms of sound insulation, to keep noise pollution to a minimum, the ephemeral Grand Palais will feature a"double skin which has strong acoustic, thermal and ventilation properties, resulting in lower energy consumption".
Each year, an additional structure will be added to the main one to provide a surface area of around 18,000 m² for certain events.
Thanks to this ephemeral Grand Palais, major events usually held in the legendary Parisian landmark will be maintained, such as FIAC, Saut Hermès, the Chanel fashion shows and Paris Photo. We also learn that the building will host the judo and wrestling competitions of the Games.
The Grand Palais will not be the only building to undergo renovation work, as the Palais de la découverte will also be temporarily relocating.
Following its closure in August 2020, the Palais de la Découverte has been temporarily relocating to the 15th arrondissement of Paris, in the heart of the Parc André-Citroën, to welcome visitors to a temporary structure with a total surface area of around 770 m² since September 2020.
