Cabinet reshuffle: who is France’s new Prime Minister Jean Castex?

Following Edouard Philippe’s resignation on Friday July 3 in the morning, French President has named Jean Castex new Prime Minister. The civil servant – who organized containment exit – is settling in Matignon. And Nicolas Revel will lead his cabinet.

This is now official: Jean Castex is named Prime Minister. A few hours after Edouard Philippe’s resignation, the Elysée has announced this Friday July 3 “mister deconfinement” is named Prime Minister and has to form a new cabinet.

To complete successfully the different missions of the government, the executive names Nicolas Revel leader of the Prime Minister’s cabinet. The current director of the Health Insurance was one of the shadow artisans of Emmanuel Macron’s 2017 victory.

A cabinet reshuffle expected for weeks and that will enable the Head of State to complete successfully the “new path” he wishes to take for the last two years of his mandate at the head of the country. But then, who is Jean Castex, the new civil servant who has the heavy task to succeed Edouard Philippe?

Of course, this name might ring no bell. If you have been following the containment exit time in France, this name might ring a bell: Jean Castex was entrusted – shortly before the crisis exit – to organize France’s containment exit. Father of four daughters, he was born in Gers and is a great rugby supporter. Senior civil servant, he is a former student from the National School of Administration (ENA) and Institute of Political Studies in Paris (SciencesPo) like president Macron and the one before him.

First named at the general accounting office after he graduated from ENA. In 2005, he becomes head of the hospitalization and organization of cares at the Ministry of Solidarities and Social Cohesion to end up mayor of Prades where he is elected in 2008. He is close to Nicolas Sarkozy. He was also named to replace Gérard Collomb when he left the Ministry of the Interior in 2018.
