Paris is a European city that is highly suffocating. Proof of it with a study conducted by the famous scientific magazine, “The Lancet planetary health”. It says the French capital is the fourth European city the air pollution is the deadliest. Every year, nitrogen dioxide released by the considerable road traffic leads to the premature death of 2,575 people in Paris, namely around 7% of mortality.
At the top of the ranking, there are Madrid, Spain, Antwerp, Belgium and Turin, Italy.
As for deaths related to PM2,5 fine particles (road traffic, wood heating, industry…), Paris ranks 370th with 2,822 premature deaths reported yearly.
But what are the good students of the study? Nordic cities, without exception, including Reykjavik, Iceland, Tromsø, Norway, Umea, Sweden, and Oulu, Finland. In these cities, the death toll is close to zero.
As some scientists says, complying with the World Health Organization’s recommendations could prevent over 1,400 deaths a year in Paris.
