Lockdown exit: reopening calendar, Castex confirms the mid-May deadline

As the coronavirus epidemic is declining in France, the reopening calendar gets more precise. The official announcement is expected for Emmanuel Macron’s address to take place by the end of April. reopening of non-necessary stores, terraces or bars and terraces, and cultural places including movie theaters, museums, theaters, and show venues, here is what we know so far.

Closed over the health situation, cultural places, cafés, bars, and restaurants have been waiting to reopen since the second lockdown, at the end of October. A first reopening calendar has been compromised because of the spread of more transmissible coronavirus variants. Since then, these places are waiting for new reopening prospects.

Dates yet seem to get clearer. This Thursday April 22, 2021 during the governmental press brief, the Prime Minister confirms potential first reopening - applying to terraces and museums - will take place around mid-May - if the health situation allows it.  Emmanuel Macron is to address to the country by the end of the month to announce the exact reopening dates.

But what do we know so far? According to information from BFMTV, non-necessary stores – closed because of the lockdown in mainland France – may reopen from between May 13 and 17, 2021. So may restaurants, bars, and cafés, first allowed to only open their terraces to patrons.

After restaurants, bars, and cafés closed for months because of the coronavirus epidemic, estimations for reopening date have been raised again, incited by the acceleration of the vaccination campaign and the hope to see the health situation improve by the summer 2021. Last but not least, as for cultural places including movie theaters, museums, theaters, and show venues, they could resume work by mid-May with new fitted gauges.

According to several elected representatives who attended the Covid crisis meeting this Thursday April 15 with Emmanuel Macron, terraces and museums are the first places to reopen when lockdown is lifted.
